MATHEMATICS

Math skills are introduced when the child moves from sensorial explorations to measuring and counting. A child reaches the intellectual maturity to learn math when he notices the difference between quantity and sizes and begins asking questions like "how much" and "how many?". This intellectual maturity occurs naturally in every child. In a Montessori environment the child learns math and actually enjoys it because he/she is introduced to concrete materials to help him understand. Instead of seeing only the number 1, 100 or 1/4 in print, the child is actually able to hold these quantities. This gives a child the chance to discover and explore rather than memorize and repeat what he has been told.
