SENSORIAL MATERIALS

Senses play an important role throughout our lives. Children respond to their environment through the senses and develop sight, hearing, smell, taste and touch. Children are often interested in intricacies of the object instead of the object as a whole. Dr. Montessori's sensorial materials are designed to stimulate and refine the senses and perfect their functions. Unlike other materials, sensorial materials are scientifically designed to be different that the items that the children see everyday. It is designed that way so that the child's mind is open to whatever it teaches him and he has no preconcieved notions of the funtions of the material.

Sensorial training is important because;

- It provides for learning in an orderly manner which is beneficial for psychological and neurological development

- If a sense is isolated it can become more refined.

- It is based on learning sequence, from concrete to abstract.

- It builds a childs concentration and attention.
